Single Family Housing Repair Grants also known as Section 504 Home Repair program from the 7 CFR Part 3550 of the Housing Act of 1949. It primarily assists and supports low-income individuals as well as the elderly in the renovation and improvement of their respective homes.

The said program can provide both loans and grants for eligible beneficiaries. Section 504 Home Repair Loan is given to low-income individuals while Section 504 Home Repair Grant is given to low-income elderly.

These individuals are those who want to repair and improve their homes but aren’t financially stable for the expenses throughout the project. Moreover, the said initiative will also help each qualified household to maintain a decent, safe, and hazard-free home.

Additional Funds for the Single Family Housing Repair

The U.S. Department of Agriculture in Rural Development mainly manages and handles Single-Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants. However, each state has a Local Rural and Development Office that caters to and assists individuals who want to apply for the said initiative.

The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021 provided additional funds for the Single-Family Housing Repair Loan and Grant as assistance for families that are impacted by the pandemic. The said program will focus on existing Section 502 direct and Section 504 borrowers who received payment moratorium related to Covid-19.

Additional information regarding existing Section 502 direct and Section 504 borrowers can be seen on USDA's official website. Moreover, the said initiative will last until September 20, 2023, this means that the agency can support more individuals in need by repairing and renovating their homes.

How Much Can You Get If You're Eligible?

The amount of assistance from the Single-Family Housing Repair Loan and Grant may vary based on the qualifications of a household. However, the USDA Rural Development ensures that each eligible household will get a sufficient loan or grant for the renovation of their home.

In terms of loans, a qualified household can receive a maximum of $20,000. On the other side, $7,500 is the maximum amount of benefit from the said initiative. Also, there can be a possible combination of loan and grant that can reach $27,500 of financial assistance.

There may be a huge difference between the loan and grant amount but it will be the choice of the household. Remember that grants are just given to the elderly at the age of 62 and above. Moreover, loans require their beneficiaries to repay while grants are completely free.

However, some states offer a higher amount of loans and grants for individuals who live within the state’s rural area under the Single-Family Housing Repair Loan and Grant. The amount will depend on the Local Office of each state.
